COMPETITION REPORTS
2007 Inter Insular
Guernsey were victorious in petanque's inter-insular by 30 matches to 18.
Twelve doubles teams from the local club travelled to Jersey to play against the combined strength of 260 players from three clubs under the umbrella of the Jersey Petanque Federation.
With such a large base to select a host team from, and playing on their home terrain, the competition was a very big challenge for the Guernsey Players.
Round 1 ended all square at 6 games each.
In round 2 Guernsey established a slender lead of 7-5. Then, in round three, the Sarnians emerged with an incredible 9-3 result.
There was no stopping them now. The Jersey teams were reeling and surrendered the final round 4-8.
All the Guernsey members contributed to the victory, helping each other all day long.
The team spirit was excellent, but there were four pairs deserving of particular mention.
Dave Harvey and Fred Wallnofer, Seb Renaud and Marcel Edwards, Jenny de la Rue and Lee Holberry and Paul Duchemin and Bonnie Roberts won all their games, giving the team a terrific platform to drive forward to secure the result needed.
In the 21 years that the Trophy has been played for, Guernsey now has 12 wins to Jersey's eight, while there was one drawn year.

JERSEY TEAM 2007
VAUCLUSIENNE COMPETITION
This Trophy was last played for in 2002. It is a novel competition in which a team can be made of A 'Triple',
A 'Double', or a 'Single'. Played over 4 rounds in November, 9 members elected to play as a singles team (using 6 boule) there were 19 doubles teams, and 2 triples teams. Two other different aspects were added to make the competition more meaningful, firstly, the system used to define the results was 'points difference' and not games won, secondly - all games were played to 15 points rather than the usual 13.
The results were extremely close, with Shirley and Ken Bonsall taking 4th place with 29 points. in third place were Hazel Clitheroe and Pauline Hickie with 30points,second place Fred Wallnofer and Dave Harvey with 33 points, while in first place was the almost invincible duo of Seb Renaud and Marcel Edwards with 35 points.
WINTER DOUBLES 2007
With 28 teams, over 7 weeks of play, playing 14 different opponents, the results demonstrate just how competitive the competition was.
The winners (3rd in 2006) Marcel Edwards & Seb Renaud listed 12 wins to take the Trophy and also 10 valuable points each in the Greens Grand Prix Trophy competition
In 2nd place (winners in 2006) were Dave Harvey & Fred Wallnofer also with 12 wins but with a lesser points difference.
A great 3rd place for the new pairing of Steve Bonsall and Geoff de la Rue. Double Trouble by name and Double Trouble by nature, they recorded some big scalps along the way, and if confidence and belief in themselves were to count, they would undoubtedly be the winners.
Taking 4th place Paul Duchemin and Bonnie Robert put a very creditable performance, after a disastrous start to the competition losing their first two games 5-15 and 4-15
Derek Le Page and Alan Enevoldsen will be delighted and disappointed in 5th place. Leading the league table for a long time, surprising even themselves with their results and standings, before dropping a game on both of the last two weeks to let the chasing pack engulf them.

SPRING TRIPLES
'Easy Does It' Win the Spring Triples
The Spring Triples received a stormy passage throughout its seven weeks of play. Seeeding, and mixed sex's team formation, saw reservations and petulance from some members. Absenteeism coupled with the misuse of the substitute system, led to some fixture pile-ups.
Winning the Springs Triple Trophy, were 'Easy Does It' (Vikki Le Poidevin, Iain Haith and Seb Renaud). After loosing 2 of their first 4 games the trio were not in contention until the later stages of the tournament, then putting together an impressive run of 6 wins from 6 games, they emerged as very worthy winners. Le Poidevin the pointer was in great form throughout, while Haith the Shooter was in devastating form, Renaud playing the milieu role, did this with great aplomb, playing with a maturity way above his young age.
In second place, were 'Trois Poisson's (Josh Cutter, Marcel Edwards, & Paul Duchemin). Playing together for the first time, listed as a scratch team, and with 13 year old Cutter being relatively new to competition, their expectations would have been exceeded by this very creditable 2nd place. Edwards a frequent competition winner, captains the team and calls the shots. Duchemin a competent player whose ability to place and fire makes him an ideal all rounder/milieu member of the team. Cutter as the pointer proceeded to play his role to a very high standard, earning the plaudit of his team and of his opponents.
Another very commendable performance, earned 'Les Mouettes' (Berry Savage, Dave Harvey, & Fred Wallnofer) third place in the competition. While Harvey and Wallnofer are regular Trophy Winners in the club, for this 'mixed' triples they teamed up with Savage, a brand new member and a brand new player. Add to that the fact that they were seeded as a scratch team, and the size of their achievement can be gauged.
Les Marettes Plus (Pat & Martyn Mace, & Alan Enevoldsen) dropped two games in the last two rounds , which saw them drop from 1st to 4th.

PRESIDENTS TROPHY
Wednesday 2nd May at the Guernsey Club de Petanque, the annual "Ladies versus the Gentlemen" competition was played for the Presidents Trophy.
24 Ladies played 27 men over 3 rounds, in doubles and triples games
The Ladies had last beaten the men in 1994!
Round 1 saw 6 wins to each team.
Round two and the Ladies excelled themselves to win 7 to the Men's 5
Round 3, the noise volume increased greatly, 6 wins to the ladies and 5 to the men.
The Ladies completed a well deserved victory with nineteen wins to the men's sixteen.
An innovation to negate the numerical advantage of the men was imposed whereby the Ladies were given an extra "bonus Boule" to be played at the end of each end. The men failed to alter their game to combat this ingredient by better defending the head, and paid the penalty. Kathie Jehan was the leading player with 3 wins and 22 plus points. The writing was on the wall very early on, as the very first result to be listed saw Stella Machon and Anne Cuthbertson "Fanny" (13 - 00) one of the best men's teams Dave Harvey and Mike Green.
The jubilant Ladies were presented with the trophy by the subdued and very "ungracious in defeat" Gentlemen.
( report by a gutted Captain John Cuthbertson! )
JOHN MAHY MEMORIAL TROPHY
The inaugural competition for the coveted John Mahy Trophy, attracted an entry of 22 doubles teams. The teams were split into two groups, playing two games in the morning and three games in the afternoon. The winners of both groups then played each other for first and second place, while the runners up in both groups played each other for third and fourth place.
The battle for third and fourth place was a long game, Kate Moss and George Murphy running into a big lead, before Graham Machon and John Howlett fought back into contention with some great pointing and firing. But the fire power of Kate Moss, and the consistent placing of George Murphy was not to be denied, so taking third place on the day.
The final was a tense battle, both teams were defensive for the first few ends, before starting to attack and to take chances, using the full array of shots at the disposal of both teams. Slowly, the all round ability of Dave Harvey coupled with the adventurous style of Jimmy Ramsay, saw the points gap between the teams stretch to a winning margin, this despite both Seb Renaud and Iain Haith playing some great boule.
The replica awards sponsored by 'The Institute Of Well Being' were represented by Anna Duchemin. Anna presented the awards for third place to Kate Moss and George Murphy, and the awards for runner up to Seb Renaud and Iain Haith.
The Main Trophy, was sponsored by Ann Mahy and George Murphy, and it was Owen Mahy who was pleased to present the Main award. ( A Trophy made by Peter Surry incorporating boules belonging to the late John Mahy). The winners of the 2007 John Mahy Memorial Trophy were Dave Harvey and Jimmy Ramsay.
With all the awards being sponsored, the Club was pleased to donate all of the competition fees, plus a donation from the committee, totalling £160, to 'Maison Million Appeal Alzheimers Care Project

LADIES DOUBLES 2007 For 10 games against 5 different opponents over 5 weeks, 12 teams vied for the prestigious Ladies Doubles Trophy. Two teams established a lead over the others, Margaret Le Page and Ann Cuthbertson surprising even themselves to finish in a very creditable 2nd place with 9 wins from 10 games. Dropping only the very last game, but winning by a 25 points difference, Kate Moss and Pat Mace "incredibly" listed their 6th consecutive win in this annual Trophy. |

MENS DOUBLES 2007 A good entry of 18 teams played 10 rounds against 10 different opponents over 5 weeks, with each game played to 15 points rather than the normal 13. Although played in June, the inclement weather saw most of the games played on the indoor floodlit terrains. Four teams established a lead over the chasing pack, before the leaders lost their final 3 games, to finish in 4th place. Dave Harvey and Fred Walnofer although only dropping one game, had to be content with 3rd place,. Taking 2nd place but only by the slender difference of 5 points were Seb Renaud and Iain Haith. The very popular winners of the Trophy, listing 10 wins from 10 games, and getting a huge cheer at the presentations were Jimmy Ramsay and Nev S Jehan. |

MEN'S SINGLES COMPETITION 2007 |
HAITH WINS SINGLES WITH A 100% RECORD!
The Guernsey Club de Petanque "Men's Singles2007" competition attracted an entry of 20 players. The Competitors played three games against three different opponents on each of the two evenings of play. Singles is not the preferred game by many of the club members, as they tend to be more serious, and a deal less noisy than doubles or triples.
Different strategies are needed in these "tete - a - tete matches, where the "boule devant" becomes almost a vital to avoid giving away 3 or even 2 points on any one end. Winning the toss to select the terrain most suited to your game also increases in importance. However the results show that the top places have been filled by members who are acknowledged shooters, indicating that many players failed to defend the head by pointing in front of the coche.
Winning the trophy for the first time in his many years of trying, Iain Haith recorded a great 6 wins from 6 games. From the start Haith was full of confidence and self belief, and his dominance is illustrated by the fact that the average score against him was just 5 points.
Losing only the very first game in the competition, Marcel Edwards then won all the rest by a very healthy points difference, to take the runner-up place.
David Harvey was third, also with 5 wins and 28 points difference, while in fourth place was last years winner Paul Duchemin with 5 wins and 27 points difference, and deeply ruing that 1 point difference.
The only other player to record 5 wins was Seb Renaud listing 19 points difference.

Second place with 10 wins and 91 points were husband and wife team Geoff and Jenny de la Rue. The duo also received awards for being the highest placed team of mixed sexes. In fact Jenny was the only female name our of the top 9 placed teams. Only loosing 1 game of the twelve and with a huge 97 points, winning the Summer Doubles 2007 were Paul Duchemin and Marcel Edwards.

In second place was John Pedlar again with 9 wins but with a 72 points difference. 3rd place went to Dave Harvey (last years winner) with 9 wins and 63 points difference. GUERNSEY OPEN 2007
68 teams, an increase on 2006, contested the Savills Private Finance Open Doubles Competition held at the Guernsey Club's headquarters in St Andrews.
Over half the entrants came from Jersey, the U.K. and Holland, with one from France, albeit an English couple , Norma and Stuart Parkway who have made their home in Beziers.
Split into groups of four, each team played 3 games in the morning session, the winners of each group qualifying for the main tournament. Three more matches in the afternoon brought together the Welsh pairing of Jim Page and A Jones (A.J.) against Jersey's Sid and Marion Simkin, to contest the final.
A tense affair resulted in a 13-12 victory for the Welsh pair.
The Plate final, for second place teams after the morning session, saw Guernsey's Paul Duchemin and John Hosking overcome the Parkways. Losing 0-13 Duchemin and Hosking scored 4,5and 4 in three consecutive ends to take the trophy.
The Consolage 1 for third placed teams was an all Guernsey final, with Neville Jehan and Shane Brehaut defeating Ken and Shirley Bonsall 13-0
The Consolage 2 final for fourth placed teams resulted in success for Jersey's Lyndon and Joan Lewis who beat Guernsey's Martyn and Pat Mace.
The following day 42 teams took part in the Cooper Brouard Open Triples. After four rounds the semi-finals brought together Guernsey's Iain Haith, Seb Renaud and George Murphy who defeated the Parkways and team mate Marcel Edwards, while Guernsey's Dave Harvey Scott Welbourne, and Bonnie Robert overcame Page ,Jones and Bill Davies.
An entertaining final, watched by 100 or so spectators, saw the Harvey, Wellbourne, and Robert combination carry off the trohy, largely due to the staring role played by youngster Wellbourne.
The 2008 Guernsey Open will take place on the 13th and 14th September.
