2008 Competition Reports
“WORLD CLASS” Win The Winter Doubles.
A
big entry of 34 teams played 12 games against different opponents over six
weeks.
Organised
by the Guernsey Club de Petanque, the competition was split into two divisions,
both of which were so competitive
that the results were still in doubt right up to the final game.
“World Class” Marcel Edwards and Paul Duchemin were the winners of the 2008 Winter Doubles, earning the Trophy – Replicas – and maximum points in the year long Greens Grand Prix Competition.
Dropping
only one game of the twelve played, Edwards and Duchemin were strong in every
department, this
demonstrated by their huge 96 plus point tally.
Four
teams ended with 9 wins each and were separated only by points difference.
Leading this chasing group and
taking second place were Les Mouettes, Dave Harvey and Fred Wallnofer. In third
place just 16 points behind, after
outperforming all expectations, were Albian-- Scott Welbourne and Jimmy Ramsay.
The
Club division was convincingly won by Blues Return – Gavin Michel and Roy
Gaudion. Listing 11 straight wins
they dropped only one game in the series, and that being the very last match.
Uncharacteristically holding
good form for the entire six weeks, Gaudion was pointing with sustained
accuracy, while Michel
played an above average success rate with his shooting.
With 10 wins, Wee Two-- Kathie Jehan and Joan Ramsay took second place, the only team to keep pace with the leaders for a long time.
A
very healthy 57 points score displays clearly the margin of the wins of most of
their games.
With some justification, arguably these two teams could/ should have been playing in the Premier division, the organisers can only state that it is easy to be wise after the event.
Taking
third place, after exceeding
all expectations, recording 8 wins and 39 points were Rich
Pickings --Ruth and Norman Rich.
The
presentations and photograph session will be held in the Club room, with the
Club President doing the honours.

HENRY VAUDIN TROPHY 2008
Competition organiser vice - captain Paul Duchemin was pleased with the number of
members ( 36 ) who, over the four Saturday afternoons in February, played the
necessary 8 games. This being the amount needed of the twelve games played to qualify.
Using a random draw and the 'Round Robin' system, so as to alter as little of the normal
Saturday friendlies as possible, ( Henry used to relish the relaxed friendly atmosphere )
there was a bigger than usual turn out on each afternoon.
There were no less than 7 members with the maximum 8 wins, separated only by a
points difference score.
The winner (surprise, surprise), exploiting his great all round ability, was Marcel Edwards.
In second place, and only a very few points adrift, was Rod Green.
Taking third place was Lief Eriksson, while wife Madeleine Eriksson was the highest
placed Lady, her 8 wins earning her sixth place overall.

MEN'S AND LADIES DOUBLES 2008
DOUBLE M REIGN SUPREME
The Guernsey Club de Petanque Women's Doubles was won once again by DOUBLE M
(Kate Moss and Pat Mace)
An incredible record of victories stretching back to 2001 sets an achievement unlikely to
be equalled in any of the clubs events.
Arguably it was the absence of a recognisable dedicated shooter in all the other teams that gave Double M the edge.
Fully expecting a much harder challenge from the other 11 entrants, Double M maintained good form throughout to win 11 of the 12 games played.
The classic team make-up of Mace, the unflappable, dependable pointer, and Moss, the accurate shooter and tactician, proved too strong for the opposition once again.
An excellent sustained performance saw Simply The Best (Jenny de la Rue and Stella Machon) take second place with 9 wins, while Shortbread (Joan Ramsay and Glen Gaudion) were delighted to claim third with seven wins, only a few points ahead of two other teams with the same number of games won.

The Men's Doubles saw 18 teams play 12 rounds over six weeks in an excellent tournament, with six all in contention for the top spot going into the last two rounds.
It was Allberry (Lee Holberry and Dave Allen) who took the coveted trophy with 11 wins.
Allen, the club president, a hugely experienced player, played throughout with great confidence, pointing and shooting at his best and seeming to relish every challenge.
Holberry, only recently returned to competition after a lengthy absence, played with all his usual considerable ability in his recognisable relaxed manner, as though he had not missed a days play.
In second place, with nine wins and 66 points and arguably the pre-competition favourites, were Too Fast Too Furious (Seb Renaud and Iain Haith).
Well in contention for first place right up to the last two rounds, they then surprisingly lost to 12th placed The Cruisers (Dave Moore and Norman Rich) 12-13 and to ninth placed Coolaboule (Siegi Moherndle and Marcel Edwards) 11-13.
The Father and son pairing, Me and the Nipper (Ken and Steve Bonsall), took third place, also with nine wins and only11 points short of the number two place.

POINTING AND SHOOTING TROPHIES 2008
Pointing Trophy
The pointing trophy was last played in 2004. Twenty nine club members played two rounds of 6 disciplines, all calling for different aspects of skill .
The coche, placed at different lengths, defended by boule in turn :- on the left, the right, in front and behind. To be successful the pointer needed the ability to lob, to roll, to spin and to push with their own boule.
Out of a possible 36 points the range of scores was from 18 - 4, with the majority of members in the 7-11 range.
In third place with 14 points was John Syvret, beaten by only one point by second placed Neville S Jehan. The winner was club President Dave Allen, who exuded confidence in plenty to achieve the winning score of 18 points.

Shooting Trophy
This Trophy again has not been played for since 2004. With a Maximum score of 72 points available, the majority of members were ranged in the 20 - 30 band. Six disciplines were played twice, both scores counted towards the total. The tests were set at differing lengths with the target boule defended in turn, in front on the right left and centre. In third place with 33 points was Paul Duchemin, with Kate Moss taking second place with 34 points having previously won the trophy six times. In first place, in a different class to the rest scoring 48 points, was Seb Renaud
